Hi, I’m Leonard Collins. I am an experienced software engineer and leader living in New York City. I currently work on mobile applications using the Flutter framework, with an extensive background on building native Android applications and Java web apps. I have been building software for over 12 years and led the Android team at Fuzz Productions through tremendous growth, with revenue streams from clients such as Shake Shack, Wegmans, NY Post, and Anheuser-Buschs, up until Fuzz’s acquisition by Monstarlab. I am also the founder of Afrostories, a digital platform for cataloging and teaching Pan-African history.

After earning my Bachelors in Mathematics and Computer Science from Hunter College, I started my career as a Quality Assurance Engineer doing manual and automated testing for mobile applications–developing my skills for creating test plans, test scripts, and verifying requirements. I then became an Android Engineer followed by an Android Team Lead. A couple years of doing code reviews, coaching, and providing architectural guidance led to my promotion to head of the Android department at Fuzz Productions. In 2019, with the ever constant question of how do we reduce the cost of building mobile apps, I experimented with Flutter as a cross platform solution and loved the results. Coincidentally, my time at Fuzz came to an end at the beginning of 2020 and I subsequently invested in Flutter by becoming a Senior Engineer at Simplebet Inc where I used Flutter to build a suite of real time micro-market casual gaming products.

My journey has placed me at the center of all aspects of the software development lifecycle and has helped foster a love for planning, software architecture, and people coaching. I believe that mobile applications are convenient and necessary for brands to continually provide value to end users, however my passion is simply to craft software that provides value. Be it a mobile application for customers, a plugin to help developers, or an API to enable a feature. The icing on the cake is being in a position to coach others into doing the same.

With many app releases and updates under my belt–learning from the successes and failures along the way–I’m hungry to continue my growth as an engineer and leader. My approach is to focus on small, measurable steps, iterating as I learn what works and what doesn’t; crafting software through meticulous controlled experimentation. I’m open to opportunities to coach and contribute to teams working on products at scale, be it backend, frontend, or tooling. You can reach me at leonard@lcollins.info.
